The Western Pact was an alliance of nations leading up to and during the Imperial Spring. It was formed by Ragnar Firebeard in around 210 AIC. The alliance was founded by Thure and its members included Whitehaven and Blackrode. Nosamo, despite never being a full member of the alliance, was considered extremely close to the members. Lorem Ipsum may be considered another friend to the alliance, at least during certain periods of the Imperial Spring.
The terms of the alliance were as follows:
- Full military alliance
- Free movement of forces
- Complete sharing of intelligence
The formation of the alliance was done by a special session of the Thing of Thure, led by Ragnar Firebeard, who was accompanied by the lord of Whitehaven. Ragnar Firebeard's speech, on the need to form an alliance, was recorded as follows:
We all feel it. The world of our fathers is becoming a thing of the past, a mere story for our children. Times are changing, and you know it! There are no tribal territories anymore, no more free cities, no more independent counties and lordships. The Basileans have swallowed everything East of Thure, and you heard the rumors about Portsmith! Everything we hold dear, everything our fathers and their fathers have ever known is no more! The Empire's iron fist is smashing the scattered remains of the free people, their adder-tongued 'diplomacy' has lead to the annexation of half a continent! How long do you think we can hold against this power on our own?"
Whitehaven, the proud seafarers to our west, have been our loyal and powerful brothers in arms in the Basilean skirmishes of the past, and we have no reason to doubt their ongoing committment. And yet, will we be able to weather these dire times ahead? Are we strong enough? Two peoples, loosely bound by common interest and a shared border, against a continent-spanning unified empire? I tell you, my brothers, the times of old are gone and they will never return. If we are to keep our freedom, we will have to band together, to join forces in ways unheard of by our forefathers. The time of lone heroism is over, this is a new age dawning - an age of unity, an age of alliances. My brothers of Thure, and my brothers of Whitehaven, and my brothers in all the free realms of the west, welcome to a new era: Welcome to the Western Pact!
