The '''War of the Spice Islands''' began in 843 [[AIC]] when [[Leopoli]] declared war on [[Lymetis]] and [[Desteylle]] declared war on [[Aethytia]]. [[Karlsbund]], hoping to gain influence with the cities, declared war on [[Leopoli]] to defend Lymetis.

== Background ==
The trade of the southern nations is mainly based on the exchanges with the Spice Islands. Though Desteylle and Karlsbund maintain trade relations with the Nakajima nations, they are vastly outcompeted there by both the [[Order of St. Castor]] and the [[Holy Archadian Empire]]. In the south a status quo is maintained allowing a roughly equal split of the trade coming from the Spice Islands.

In early 843, the Leopolitan and Steylch operated a diplomatic rapprochement and signed an alliance. An expedition to Lymetis and Aethytia was prepared for the next year.
